Whenever I sit down at my laptop to study AI or work on projects, my favorite assistant is the Gemini Side Panel in Google Chrome . Having AI right next to my active browser tab without switching windows has been an absolute lifesaver.

Recently, I discovered a brand-new feature right inside the side panel chat bar that made my workflow even easier.

💡 No More Manual Screenshots and Uploads

In the past, whenever I came across a confusing diagram, foreign phrase, or error message on a webpage, I used the Windows shortcut ( Win+ Shift+ S) to capture the area, copy it, and paste it into the Gemini chat box.

💬 My Experience

Describing a complex screen in words was often tricky. Uploading screenshots was helpful, but taking those extra steps every single time felt a bit tedious.

Then one day, I clicked the +(plus) button in the side panel input bar and spotted a red Newbadge next to a screen capture icon.

Similar to the Circle to Search feature on smartphones, this new update allows PC Chrome users to select a specific region on their screen with a mouse drag and ask Gemini about it instantly.

  • Select Specific Area: Instead of capturing the whole screen, simply drag over the exact text, image, or chart you want to ask about.

  • Instant Prompting: The selected region attaches directly to your chat box so you can ask, "What does this mean?" right away.

👉 How to Use It (3 Quick Steps)

  1. Open Gemini Side Panel:

    Click the Gemini icon in the top-right corner of Chrome.

  2. Click +& Choose Selection Tool:

    Click the +icon in the chat bar and select 'Capture area' .

  3. Drag and Ask:

    Drag your cursor over any area on your webpage and type your question.

This feature is rolling out to both free and Gemini Advanced users. If you don't see it after clicking the + icon, check the following:
1.  Update Chrome : Go to chrome://settings/help to ensure your browser is updated to the latest version.
2. Check Account Login : Make sure you are signed into your Google account on Chrome.
3. Gradual Rollout : Google updates features gradually, so it may take a few days to appear on your browser.
